History

Rooted in the Fairweather Lodge Model. Person-centered since day one.

The Origins of Tasks Unlimited

Tasks Unlimited was inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. George W. Fairweather, who developed an innovative alternative to long-term hospitalization for individuals with mental illness. His approach, known as the Fairweather Lodge Model, emphasized community living, peer support, and meaningful work. Building on this model, Tasks Unlimited began working with individuals at Anoka State Hospital to plan their transition into the community and establish their own “Lodge”—a supportive home environment where members could live, work, and pursue their goals together.

Tasks Unlimited, Inc. was officially founded on June 2, 1970. Following several months of training in the Fairweather Lodge Model and guidance from Dr. Fairweather’s team, the first Lodge opened its doors on October 18, 1970, marking the beginning of a new chapter in community-based mental health support.
